An air depot!”). Also, the footage from different parts of the country (Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Memphis, the beaches of Florida, Chicago). Watch out for the racist reference to “darkies loadin’ cotton” in Memphis, though. Ultimately, it’s a pretty forgettable film, although it stars one of the most enchanting and breathtaking women ever captured on film, French actress Mathilda May, who walks around much of the film nude and has a mind-bogglingly beautiful body. May, more than the shocking zombie-esque special effects, kept me in a trance.

From the E.L. Character actor Vladimir Sokoloff (from Moscow originally) adds a bit of gravitas to the proceedings. The film is great drive-in fun. With the exception of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), this bad boy is probably the best of the post-Wolf Man Universal Monster Movies. Lugosi spoke in the original version, but the filmmakers cut out his dialogue. So when you watch the film, you can see his mouth moving, but no words come out. It’s a shame, but it certainly doesn’t ruin the film, which holds up extremely well almost 70 years later.

From the Lugosi Files: Bela Lugosi clearly has it in for this...

From the Lugosi Files: Bela Lugosi clearly has it in for this dame.
